The Last Robot Apocalypse Supper

“But woe to that robot who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been built.”

Robot Rescue, by Mark Bryan for Gallery 1988's show Robot Carnival.

I Acted Like A Robotic Cowboy

I'm not what you think I am
I'm the king of siam
I've got a bald head
My name is Yul Brynner
And I am a famous movie star
Perhaps you saw me in Westworld
I acted like a robotic cowboy
It was my best role
I can not deny I
Felt right home deep inside
That electronic carcass
(Lyrics from Stephen Malkmus’ Jo Jo's Jacket)

Robotic Companions

Some of Nathan Stapley's recent pieces for Gallery 1998 are up for sale as prints, letting me revisit one that I didn't get around to posting — Robotic Companions. I really like the look of his work, especially when it involves 15 awesome robots.

Where's WALL-E?

While I did locate WALL-E, I was pleased to see Marvin the Paranoid Android, Twiki from Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, Muffit form the original Battlestar Galactica, Futurama's Calculon and, too my great pleasure, Mr. Butlertron from Clone High. Wesley! (Where’s WALL-E? by Richard Sargent; link via The Daily What Geek)

Bender: I came to Earth with a simple dream: To kill all humans. And this is how it must end!?

Bender is Robby the Robot in this Forbidden Planet/Futurama mashup. Leela's looking good though. (Forbidden Future at shirt.woot, link via Shopped Sci Fi)

Exterminate! Exterminated

Dalek's have no loyalty to other robots. Exterminate! (Exterminated by jimiyo at TeeFury)

Update: I have been informed that Daleks are not, in fact, robots, thus revealing my pop culture shame — I've never watched Dr. Who.

Vitruvian Robot

This is what it would look like if the Borg only assimilated robots. The Vitruvian Machine by Captain RibMan shows 40+ robots, cyborgs & machines from pop culture. Plus it says Deckard was a replicant. Had that been decided? Huh. Anyway, here's an index:

Famous Robots Roles During The Robot Apocalypse

There are some small errors in this (seems C-3PO becomes a Borg during the apocalypse and Bender's primary objectives are bending, "cheesing" it, and killing all humans,) but I love how they all turn on us in the end. (Robot Roll Call by Pleated-Jeans, via zupaztrupa)

Flaming Lips: Do You Realize?

Do you realize?
That everyone you know someday will die
And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know
You realize that life goes fast
It's hard to make the good things last
You realize the sun doesn't go down
It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

I saw an amazing performance this week by The Flaming Lips in Toronto, a true spectacle that left me in awe. These aren't my videos — my camera phone isn't up to the job, but they give you a great sense of being there.

One of the highlights was the sing-along to Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots.

And Wayne Coyne did crowd surf in his space ball / hamster ball and @phrichards got a great shot. If you ever get a chance to go see this bad don't pass it up.
