Bricking Bad: Lego Meth Lab

"I am the one who blocks!"

Redditor garyisyoudotcom's friend built the Breaking Bad meth lab out of Lego. So awesome. These are just four of 15 pics - click any for the full gallery. (Thanks for the tip, Nikki.)

I Know Lego Kung Fu

Lego Matrix

Forget Bullet Time, now there is Lego Time, or at least the Lego version of the Bullet Time dodge scene from The Matrix. The difference between the two (other than the use of Lego) is the amount of time to film it — 440 hours in this case.

In every other respect, it is an exact replica of the scene, which their side-by-side comparison. If anything the Neo Lego Miniman may have been slightly more expressive than Keanu Reeves.

Geeks really do make the best fans, and these guys embrace it. From their FAQ:
Q. You guys have too much free time.
A. This is not a question. However, we do hear this a lot. All you have to do is borrow some of the time that would otherwise be spent sleeping.
I hear that. (Link via Neatorama)

Heeere's Johnny!

Heeere's Johnny

The Shining is my all-time creepiest movie. More than Psycho it has made me afraid of shower curtains. To this day I leave them open in any bathroom I'm in. It is Stanley Kubrick and Jack Nicholson at their best.

I won't be watching it tonight. Thanks to my pal Rachel Sklar at Mediate for pulling together all the clips and Shining mashups :) but boo for spreading it over 15 pages :(

Happy Halloween everyone!

Total Eclipse Of The Lego

I really can't stand Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse of the Heart, but I really love things being recreated in Lego. I'm indifferent about all-male choral groups, so I'm torn about posting this. Watch it with the sound off, perhaps? (Link via College Humor)

Clearly inspired by the Lego recreations of iconic movie posters (and not a desire to make buckets of cash out of childhood nostalgia), Warner Bros. announced that they are making a Lego film.

While no details have been announced, Variety reports that it will be a "family comedy that will mix live action and animation. Warners is keeping the plot tightly under wraps, but it's described as an action adventure set in a Lego world."

Most reaction has fallen into the "what the hell are they going to make out of that" camp, but why fight it? Hollywood will turn anything into a film — plot be damned. And there are already plans for a View-Master film so why not.

With that in mind, Vanity Fair is already suggesting directors and story lines:

Steven Spielberg: Troubled by her parents’ divorce, a little girl (Elle Fanning) builds her own fantasy world when she discovers she has the power to give life to Lego.

Wes Anderson: A precocious child spends four years locked in his bedroom in a fevered attempt to make Lego coruduroy.

Martin Scorsese: A regular Lego guy from the Lego neighborhood gets sucked into the Lego mob after shooting a Lego cop.

Thanks to @poppysmum for the tip.

Legos Crawl In Search Of Blood

"I have something I want to tell you. I'm not like other guys." Truer words have never been spoke.

You know it's thriller, Lego thriller night. Tired of the Michael Jackson tributes and retrospectives? Too bad, I was away for the weekend and need to get it out of my system, mostly by posting this recreation of Thriller, entirely in Lego. I did an extensive five-minute search and couldn't find a less-blurry version, or the original creator for that matter. Stupid internet.

Of course Jacko's lasting legacy, at least for me, is introducing me to the world of pop culture parody, vias Weird Al Yankovic's Eat It.
Just eat it, eat it , eat it
Get yourself an egg and beat it
Have some more chicken, have some more pie
It doesn't matter , it's broiled or fried
Just eat it, eat it, eat it, eat it
eat it, eat it, eat it, eat it, ooh
That's gold, people. Thanks Michael. Thanks Al.

Tank Man of Tiananmen Square

Tiananmen Simpsons

One of the most powerful images of the the twentieth century, the image of the anonymous man who stood in front of a line of Chinese tanks during the protests at Beijing's Tiananmen Square still resonate 20 years later. Inevitably, they have made their way into pop culture, such as Selma Bouvier's trip to China. In tribute, Listicles has collected several homages to the Unknown Rebel.

Pillow Talk: 25 Strange Throw Pillows

Pillows, like T-shirts, are a lot cooler these days. Of course if I were actually to buy all of these, my house would look a lot cooler but would be sans one wife. But I found as many links as possible, should you turn out crazier than I.

Blood pool pillow: An irreverent combination of comfort and fear. Terrify/amuse your friends and family with the always funny Massive-Head-Wound Joke!

Book pillow: Instead of using a book for a pillow while studying, use a book pillow. For those who head to the university library mostly to avoid your roommates.

Hamburger pillow: Mouth-wateringly handmade and painstakingly realistic. Hold the onion, of course.

Campfire pillow: Come on baby, light my fire. Try to set the couch on fire!

Cork pillow: Put a cork in it. The material is actual thinly sliced cork bark on fabric, for that real wine bottle feel.

Egg pillow: Lay your head sunny side up. Next best thing to sleeping through breakfast.

Guitar pillow: For those about to lounge, we salute you.

Gun pillow: Happiness is a warm gun pillow.

Headhunter pillow: If you rest your head here, it may come back smaller.

Horse head pillow: This Godfather-inspired pillow will make anyone a offer they can't refuse.

Hydrant pillow: Just don't leave it near your dog.

Icon pillows: Because you love your Mac so much, you want to cuddle.

Lap pillow: Shaped like the legs of a kneeling woman in a short skirt, this Japanese pillow is described as "a comfy cushion for napping, reading or watching television." They forgot the words creepy and weird.

Lego pillow: When you think soft and comfortable, think hard, sharp-edged plastic bricks!

Lips pillow: It's like lying you head on Angelina Jolie's face.

Martini pillow: Nothing says classy like black velvet, stuffed, cartoon martini glasses.

Nintendo pillows: A nice retro rest for your favourite geek gamer, at least until someone makes a plush Wii.

Pizza pillow: On one side, pizza toppings. The other side resembles a crust. If this was on my couch, I would end up trying to eat it.

Rock pillow: There's a whole line of these pillows that look like huge rocks. Who can look at that picture without wincing?

Scrabble pillow: Great concept and the original designer built couches that looked like tile holders. Still, a lousy word score.

Skull and crossbones pillow: Arr, we be claiming this couch and searching for treasure under all ye couch cushions.

Sushi pillow: If you had to pick a Japanese food to turn into a throw pillow, it beats tempura.

Synthesizer pillow: Hook that baby up to you guitar pillow and rock your living room gently to sleep.

Transformer pillow: Soft and fluffy Transformer pillows, pretty much what meets the eye.

Darth Vader pillow: Our soft Sith lord. One can only assume that both sides of this pillow are always cool. Sadly, it has been discontinued.

For Your Consideration

Popped Culture has been out there delving into entertainment for years, bringing the inside story of a pop culture geek to you. In my ongoing efforts I have flown an X-Wing Fighter as a Lego Miniman:

I then traveled space and time to land in the near past to appear as Tony Manero in Saturday Night Fever:

It's the sort of thing I'm willing to do and all I ask is for you to vote for me as Best Cultural/Entertainment Blog in the Canadian Blog Awards, where I am one of five finalists.

Is it a popularity contest? Of course it is, but as a wise man once said, what's wrong with that?

Homer Simpson: JUST a popularity contest? Excuse me. What's more important than popularity?

So that's my pitch. Vote for me and I'll vote for whatever crazy thing you ask me to and should I win I will spread the vast wealth that I can only assume comes with an online, Canadian, award.

Oh yes, and go and view my full Lego Miniman history video and make your own. It's amusingly creepy.

Come as You Are: Nevermind The Parodies

Remember the baby chasing the dollar bill on the cover of Nirvana's seminal album, Nevermind? Yup, that's Spencer Elden, all of 17 now and likely chasing more than a buck for recreating this photo. Happily, this time he wore a bathing suit.

Of course this got me thinking, as I'm wont to do, about parodies of the album cover I've seen here and there, which are are now conveniently located below:

The most famous version was of a baby version of Bart Simpson chasing the almighty Krusty buck, for the November, 2002 cover of Rolling Stone. It's rare to get official parodies.

Of course the King of Parody is the other exception to the rule. "Weird Al" Yankovic's Off The Deep End, which featured Smells Like Nirvana:
Were so loud and incoherent
Boy, this oughta bug your parents
Yeah
You know you've had an impact when "Weird Al" spoofs both your hit song and your album art.

A nice take on a Van Gogh self-portrait and a comment on how much money everyone has made on the back of his art following his death. Shades of Courtney Love. Found on one of Worth 1000's brilliant photoshop contests.

LinkA mashup of Jaws and Nirvana. Cute. Again, from the archives of Worth 1000.

Millions of users at a buck a download? I think Apple found their Nirvana with the iPod. From Flickr user axb500.

Just another way those bastards killed Kenny. From a South Park fan art page, in case you couldn't tell.

I think I mostly amused by the Neverfind band name. Yet another from the whizzes at Worth 1000.

And lastly, what roundup of parodies would be complete without a Lego entry? From a collection of Lego album cover parodies. Is there anything minifigs can't do?

Madness? This... Is... Lego!

Lego minifigs! Ready your breakfast and eat hearty... For tonight, we dine in Denmark! Flickr user keithcku has created an incredibly detailed version of a poster from 300, in celebration of 30 years of the figures.

There are a couple of Lego versions of the 300 trailer floating about on YouTube, among many other parodies, but none of them seem to match the visual prowess of the film, but this mashup with Monsters, Inc. seems to do the trick.

Oh Lego, Has It Really Comes To This?

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Lego Minifigures the company has released a series of celebrity Lego minifigs, including such luminaries as Amy Winehouse, Brangelina, Madonna and the Beckhams (see below).

I was going to go into a rant about how sad it was to see Lego feeling the need to jump on the celebrity bandwagon and associate its bricks with some of the tabloids most popular denizens, but I'm beginning to doubt the veracity of these figures.

I don't doubt they exist, but I'm having trouble believing they are from Lego. I think someone has done a fabulous job and leaked them to the entertainment press that eats all things celebrity. In an effort to track down the original source I spent way too much time scouring the web and following links to find the original story or press release, but to no avail. All I came across was a checklist of all the news "sources" I used to use during my stint as a celebrity news writer. British tabloids and sites that all use the same, unattributed information.

Anyway, it was the 30th anniversary of the figures last month, so that much is true. And of anyone can find out who really created these, I'd love to find out. Even if it really was Lego. Until then, let's hope it really was just a celebrity-induced nightmare.
